The pulley pairs at each end of the actuator are locked together. When the belt is forced to cycle through the pulley system by the motor, the subtly different pulley diameters force the belt to travel at different rates in different areas. With the belt in tension, this minute rate difference forces the traveler to migrate slowly toward one end or the other. The result is virtually free gear reduction and a strong resistance to back-drive often eliminating the need for a brake in vertical applications. The HLD delivers performance similar to a ball screw, but without the limits in length caused by a ball screw’s “critical speed”. The HLD Actuators are available in lengths exceeding 3 Meters.
